Adult Swim is firing ‘Rick and Morty’ star Justin Roiland

01/25/2023 UPDATE: Justin Roiland has also been cut from Hulu’s animated series solar oppositeswhich he co-created, stars in and produces, as well as koala man, on which he served as an executive producer and voice actor. 20th Television Animation, which produces both shows, had already reached an agreement with him, but that is not the case. In a joint statement, Hulu and 20th Television Animation told Yahoo Entertainment, “We have terminated our association with Justin Roiland.” Both shows are set to continue.


Just over a week after Justin Roiland, the co-creator, executive producer and star of rick and mortyappeared in a preliminary hearing to face domestic violence charges, Adult Swim says he no longer works with him.

“Adult Swim has terminated its association with Justin Roiland,” a representative for the network told Yahoo Entertainment.

She added that the animated success would continue, and the show’s official Twitter account said the same.

Yahoo Entertainment has reached out to Roiland’s attorney for comment.

When news of the case broke, his attorney T. Edward Welbourn told Yahoo Entertainment, “It’s hard to overstate how inaccurate recent media coverage of this situation has been. To be clear, not only Justin is innocent, but we also have every expectation that this case is about to be dismissed once the district attorney’s office completes its methodical review of the evidence. We look forward to clearing Justin’s name and to help him move forward as quickly as possible.

NBC News reported on Jan. 12 that Roiland was charged in May 2020 for an incident in January of that year in Orange County, Calif., involving an unnamed woman Roiland was dating at the time. He later pleaded not guilty to one count of domestic assault with bodily harm and one count of forcible confinement by threat, violence, fraud and/or deception.

A protective order filed in October 2020 prohibited Roiland from harassing, threatening, surveilling or coming within 100 feet of an unnamed person.

Plans to redesign the show, which was co-created by Community mastermind Dan Harmon, are unknown; Roiland voiced the two main characters. rick and morty had secured an extraordinarily large renewal deal in 2018 for an additional 70 episodes, and less than half of those have aired.
